Judge Orders Competency Evaluation for 18-Year-Old Defendant in Fatal T-Mobile Robbery Case

Defense attorney Maura Lynch filed a motion for a competency evaluation for her juvenile client charged with murder. 

Defendant Arthur McCaden appeared alongside Lynch in mental health court before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin on Aug. 2. 

Judge Rasin approved the evaluation, citing the seriousness of the crime.

McCaden, 18, will appear before Judge Rasin again on Aug. 16 in mental health court. 

The defendant is charged with first-degree murder, two counts of attempted armed robbery, three counts of firearm use in a felony violent crime, three counts of first-degree assault, three counts of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, two counts of conspiracy to use a firearm in a felony violent crime, armed robbery, possession of a firearm as a minor, illegal possession of a regulated firearm and having a handgun on his person in connection to an April 30 incident. 

According to a press release, on April 30, officers from the Southeast District of the Baltimore Police Department responded to the T-Mobile store located on the 2500 block of Boston Street. Upon their arrival they found 23-year-old employee Fabian Sanchez-Gonzalez suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. 

The victim was transported to Johns Hopkins at Bayview Hospital, where he died two days later.

According to WBAL, the defendant’s 14-year-old brother, whose name is unknown, is also being tried in the case.

The brothers are also accused of being connected to three other robberies that also occurred in April. 

According to WBAL, the defendant and his brother also have a robbery case from an incident that occurred in Mount Laurel, New Jersey where they are accused of robbing a Best Buy.
