On March 27, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn scheduled a trial for a defendant charged with committing a murder in 2022.

During the hearing on Monday, defendant Travis Rogers, represented by attorney stand-in to Matt Zernhelt who was standing in for Jason Ott, rejected a plea offer of life, suspending all but 50 years for first-degree murder and a concurrent 20 years for use of a firearm during a felony-violent crime.

Rogers, 35, is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in a felony violent crime, and possessing a firearm with a felony conviction in connection to the murder of 53-year-old Santos Munoz-Hernandez on Oct. 15, 2022.

According to court documents, on the day of the incident, officers were called to the 2600 block of Wilkens Avenue for reports of a shooting. On arrival, officers found Munoz-Hernandez with multiple gunshots to the head and torso.

Rogers’ Hick’s date, which is a defendant’s right to be tried within 180 days of his or his attorney’s first court appearance, fell on June 12. Rogers elected to retain his hight but due to the availability of counsel, Judge Phinn found probable cause to schedule the trial beyond that date.

Judge Phinn scheduled the defendant’s trial for Sept. 14 with Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Yolanda Tanner presiding. The trial is expected to last five days.
