Judge Agrees to Severe Defendant’s Two Firearms Cases, Postponing Attempted Murder Trial

An attempted murder defendant’s jury trial was postponed until next month after Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gregory Sampson agreed to severe the defendant’s case from another handgun-related case.

Larry Jackson, 33, was scheduled to begin a jury trial for attempted murder on June 5; however the prosecutor and defense attorney James Sweeting III only completed some pre-trial motions before Sweeting had to return to an unrelated trial. On June 6, Judge Sampson granted defense counsel’s motion to try Jackson’s case separately from another firearm case.

The defendant’s attempted murder trial was rescheduled for July 5 before Judge Cynthia Jones.

Jackson is charged with attempted first and second-degree murder, first and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, firearm use in a felony violent crime, two counts of having a handgun on his person, two counts of having a loaded handgun in a vehicle, discharging firearms, and three counts of firearm possession with a felony conviction.

Court documents state that on July 23, 2022, a man alerted a Baltimore Police officer that he was walking home from work on the 1800 block of McCulloh Street where another man riding a bicycle began shooting at him. The victim said that he believed the man fired four or five shots as the victim ducked behind a car to avoid the gunfire, and that he knew the man as a local drug dealer in the area.

Six shell casings were later found at the crime scene in addition to six bullet holes found in a blue Volkswagen.

The following day, the victim called police and said that he saw the suspect, later identified as Jackson, standing on the back porch of a home on the 400 block of Wilson Street. Police arrested Jackson without incident.
