A Baltimore man accused of fatally shooting a 43-year-old man was offered a plea of 40 years in prison on Dec. 6 at Baltimore City Circuit Court.

Devante Stewart, 27, is allegedly involved in the fatal shooting on June 16 when Baltimore Police Department officers were called to the 1000 block of Granby Street after reports of gunfire. When police arrived at the scene, they found Lee Johnson suffering from gunshot wounds.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.

In September, the prosecution said police saw two suspects leaving the scene. Stewart allegedly hijacked a car and then ran into an apartment on the 400 block of Aisquith Street, where he was arrested.

The defendant is charged with first-degree murder, carjacking, car theft, and several burglary, assault, and firearm-related charges.

On Monday, the prosecution offered Stewart a plea of 40 years, suspending all but 35, for first-degree murder, and 20 years, suspending all but five, and five years without parole for firearm use in a felony violent crime.

Defense attorney Isabel Lipman informed Judge Melissa M. Phinn that she had not yet relayed the offer to her client.

Stewart’s trial is currently scheduled for May 23, 2022.
