Homicide Defendant Jury Trial Postponed a Day While He Is Transported to Court

A homicide defendant had his jury trial postponed due to not being transported to court on Oct. 24 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Christopher Panos

Bright Ogueri is charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm during a felony violent crime, and possession of a firearm with a felony violent crime in connection to an incident on May 29, 2020. 

According to WMAR News, officers were called to the 4000 block of 6th Street at 7:25 p.m. for reports of an assault that Ogueri committed, where a 38-year-old man was found inside his home. 

Ogueri told police that he believed that the victim was dead. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Monday, the defendant was scheduled to begin jury selection but it was postponed due to him not being transported to court. However, he was transported later in the afternoon so he could be present for his jury trial set to begin Tuesday morning. 

The prosecutor presented the defendant a new plea of 40 years, suspending all but 30 years with five years supervised probation for first-degree murder; a consecutive 20 years, suspending all but 10 years with the first five years without parole with five years supervised probation for use of a firearm during a felony violent crime; a consecutive 15 years, suspending all but 10 years with five years supervised probation for possession of a firearm with a felony violent crime. Leaving the defendant with a total of 75 years suspending all but 50 years with five years supervised probation. 

Ogueri’s, 42, defense counsel Avie Stone informed the court that he wanted to speak with his client regarding the new plea offered by the prosecutor. 

Ogueri’s trial is scheduled for Oct. 25.
