The trial of a 61-year-old manslaughter defendant was postponed before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland.
Steven Heggie, Sr, is charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in the death of a child younger than 13 years old, second-degree child abuse, involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment for the death of 13-month-old Messiah Heggie on Oct 27, 2023.
Heggie’s attorney, Robert Cohen, said Oct. 29 that Heggie could not be present in court because he was hospitalized for a heart attack.
Heggie is scheduled for mental health court on Oct. 30, according to the Maryland Judiciary website.
In addition, Cohen requested more time to obtain the evaluation before trial.
Judge Copeland scheduled the new trial date for Nov. 6.
