A defendant was sentenced to 20 years in prison for manslaughter charges on Oct. 3 at the Baltimore City Circuit Court.
In June, Jewel Crowder, 41, was convicted of manslaughter for murdering 23-year-old Ryan Demby in September 2023. According to the prosecution, Demby had a gun on his waist when Crowder proceeded to shoot him several times near the 1100 block of South Charles Street .
Judge Yvette M. Bryant gave Crowder 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and 10 years in prison for firearm use in a felony or violent crime. The terms are consecutive, leaving Crowder with a 20-year sentence with the possibility of parole. Crowder was also given four years for reckless endangerment, which would be served concurrent to the 20-year sentence.
Before Crowder was sentenced, Demby’s parents said they miss their son everyday and asked Judge Bryant to give Crowder the maximum sentence of 35 years in prison.
Crowder also spoke before his sentencing, apologizing to Demby’s family for their son’s death.
Crowder’s defense attorney throughout the trial and sentencing was Roland Harris.
