Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer denied bail to an attempted murder defendant on Jan. 13.

Delmel Johnson is charged with four counts of second-degree attempted murder, three counts each of first and second-degree assault, attempted armed robbery, the use of a firearm during a felony violent crime, robbery, four counts of reckless endangerment, having a handgun on his person and discharging firearms in connection to an incident on Dec. 9, 2018.

According to court documents, on the day of the incident, the victim and his family were leaving Mondawmin Mall following Christmas shopping when a vehicle pulled up next to them at a stoplight. An occupant of the car pointed a gun at the victim and ordered them to exit the car.

In a state of shock, the victim sat there while the gunman shot five to seven bullets in the car before retreating back to his own.

The male victim sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder and was cut in his face and eyes, while his daughter had lost consciousness due to being shot.

Attorney Robert Linthicum, who represents the 21-year-old defendant, noted that his client has been in jail since Dec. 9, 2018, after being found guilty of one of the nine charges against him.

Linthicum said he filed for a retrial with the understanding that it would likely only happen in the fall. While waiting for his retrial approval, the defense counsel asked the judge if his client could be transported to a Baltimore City prison facility where his family resides.

Defense also asked the court to consider a detention center or home detention for the defendant.
