A 34-year-old woman charged with attempted murder had her case transferred to mental health court on July 2 after Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn approved a defense request.
The defendant, Melody Mitchell, faces charges of attempted murder, child abuse, first-degree assault and one count of disarming a law enforcement officer. Mitchell was charged in connection to a stabbing incident that occurred the evening of March 7 at a Fells Point residence.
According to police reports, officers responded to the unit block of S. Central Avenue and located a 16-year-old girl stabbed in her abdomen. Investigators later learned the victim “got into a verbal argument with a family member” while at a residence on the 300 block of S. Regester Street. The argument escalated, leading the suspect to allegedly stab the victim.
Court records indicate the case was filed on April 6, approximately one month after the stabbing.
On Thursday, defense attorney Ronald Kurland informed the court that he had filed a request on June 26 to transfer the case to mental health court. Kurland requested that the matter be reset for a future conference date, citing a need for additional time to complete psychological evaluations and recommendations. Results are expected soon, Kurland said.
The state did not object to the request and agreed to proceed through mental health court.
Judge Phinn granted Kurland’s request.
Mitchell’s case is scheduled to proceed Aug. 11 before mental health court Judge Gale E. Rasin.
The case is currently ongoing.
