Jury selection began June 22 in the attempted murder trial of 21-year-old Davon Matthews after he rejected a plea offer from the state.
Matthews faces 10 charges, including attempted murder, first-degree assault, firearm use, reckless endangerment and several counts of conspiracy in connection to a July 12, 2025 shooting in Fells Point. Police believe Matthews shot a 24-year old man several times on the 400 block of S. Broadway.
On Monday, Matthews pleaded not guilty to all counts before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea M. Handy.
Prosecutors had offered the defendant a deal of 30 years, suspending all but one to 13 years, plus five years of probation. Matthews rejected the offer.
Prior to proceedings, defense attorney Roya Hanna argued the shooting arose from self-defense, claiming Matthews tried to walk away before the victim charged at him.
Matthews is also charged with shooting an 18-year-old man in the Inner Harbor last September. Officers responded to the Neighborhoods Urban Goods store located on the 300 block of Light Street, where they found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his right shoulder.
For his alleged involvement in the Light Street shooting, Matthews was charged with first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and handgun violations. The case has since been delayed several times, with two previously scheduled trial dates facing postponements
Matthews’ trial for the Fells Point shooting is set to continue June 22.
