Baltimore’s monthly homicide count dropped to a low of 21 in February 2022, the city’s lowest recorded homicide count in the past nine months.

November and December 2021 originally held the lowest homicide count, each with 26 homicides, according to Baltimore Witness. January saw the most homicides, 35, in the past nine months.

In February 2022, six out of the city’s nine districts saw fewer homicides than in January. The Northwestern district saw four times more homicides in the first month of the year than last month, which had a recorded homicide count of two. The Eastern district followed closely behind, decreasing from six to two homicides month to month.

Decreases in homicides were also recorded in the Northeastern district from six to three, the Southwestern district from five to three, the Western district from four to three, and the Southeastern district from two to one.

According to Baltimore Witness data, there have been two arrests out of the 21 homicides in February.

Last month’s first homicide was recorded on Feb. 1 when Demetrick Lewis allegedly killed his 33-year-old female cousin on the 700 block of N. Curley Street. The victim, Shanlette Lewis, was found with a head injury after being pushed down a flight of stairs.

Lewis was arrested a week later and charged with first-degree murder, the Baltimore Police Department reported.

Baltimore City did see a significant increase of five homicides in the Southern district in February when six homicides were reported in the area. The Northern and Central districts also had more recorded homicides last month at two and one, respectively.

Baltimore Witness data also shows that there were 55 non-fatal shootings during the month. Police have arrested two suspects for the shootings.
