Accused Homicide Defendant Denied Bail for Gang-Related Attempted Murder

A defendant accused of gang-related violence was denied bail on Aug. 4 after Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Charles H. Dorsey III deemed him a threat to society.

James Brunson, who is represented by defense attorney Angela Shelton, is among 33 defendants who are charged with participating in a criminal organization as part of indictments from the Maryland Attorney General. The investigation stems from incidents in November 2021.

According to a press release from the Maryland Attorney General, the 39-year-old defendant and another suspect allegedly committed an attempted murder near W. Baltimore and N. Bentalou streets that ended with a shootout. No injuries were reported.

In addition to first-degree murder, Brunson is also charged with participating in a criminal organization, organizing/supervising/financing a criminal organization, conspiracy to organize/supervise/finance a criminal organization, conspiracy to commit an unlawful act, attempted first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, rifle/shotgun possession and rifle/shotgun possession with a felony conviction as well as three counts each of firearm possession with a felony conviction and possession of narcotics and two counts of conspiracy to distribute narcotics.
