A jury convicted a homicide defendant of second-degree murder in a prison stabbing but acquitted him of first-degree murder on March 28.
Defendant Khalil Madden, 30, was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, possession of a deadly weapon with intent to injure and possession of a weapon while confined or detained for the death of fellow inmate Shane Burton.
The jury also said Madden was not guilty of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and not guilty of wearing or carrying a dangerous weapon. However, they did find him guilty of possessing a weapon while detained.
On Aug. 27, 2021, Burton, 33, was stabbed to death at the Maryland Reception, Diagnostic and Classification Center on the 500 block of East Madison Street. According to previous trial coverage, defense attorney Staci Pipkin argued that Madden’s cellmate was responsible for Burton’s death, not her client. Counsel analyzed video footage of the three men entering a cell together, disappearing out of view for one minute and 40 seconds before Madden was seen exiting it.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie J. Hong scheduled Madden’s sentencing date for Sept. 9.
