On March 13, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Gale E. Rasin decided the custody status of a 23-year-old attempted murder defendant.
Daykai Quarles is charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder, firearm use ina felony violent crime, discharging firearms, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment in connection to a Aug. 10, 2022, incident.
Judge Rasin found Quarles competent on Jan. 10, but he remained in the mental hospital for an evaluation as to his criminal responsibility. Despite the findings of the latest report, stand-in defense attorney Sharon Bogins Eberhart told the court the defense would not be withdrawing their not criminally responsible plea. Quarles’ criminal responsibility will ultimately be determined at trial.
In the meantime, Quarles’ custody will revert to his precommitment status, which was being held without bail.
According to documents from the District Court of Maryland, Quarles and his father were arguing with a neighbor about a missing lawnmower from the second story window of their home on the 4400 block of Elderon Avenue. The neighbor told Baltimore Police Department officers that Quarles shot at him from the window, damaging his storm door. No one was injured in the shooting.
