A 2022 murder defendant had his jury trial postponed on May 30 as his defense attorney was recently assigned to the case.
Tavon Green Jr.’s trial was set to begin Tuesday before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Schiffer, but defense attorney Roland Harris requested a postponement, saying he was new to the case and unprepared for trial.
The case was sent to Judge Melissa Phinn in reception court, where the defendant’s four-day trial was scheduled to begin Aug. 14 before Judge Cynthia Jones.
The 23-year-old is charged with first-degree murder, using a handgun to commit a crime, and having a handgun on his person in connection to a shooting on April 2, 2022.
According to charging documents, Baltimore Police recovered video footage that showed the victim, Joshua Whittington, being shot on the unit block of S. Carey Street outside New York Fried Chicken. The shooting allegedly stemmed from an argument between Green and Whittington over the treatment of the latter’s son.
After the shooting, documents state, Whittington called someone and told the witness that Green shot him. Whittington died at a hospital five days later, followed by Green’s arrest on April 15, 2022.
