On May 30, a case for a 51-year-old woman charged with a murder that occurred in 2022 was sent to reception court after her jury trial was postponed.
Roya Hanna, who represents defendant Kanisha M. Spence, informed Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn that she had yet to receive discovery and that she was not prepared to start trial on Tuesday.
According to court documents, Spence is charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm during a felony violent crime in connection to the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Marquise Powell on the 1800 block of Washington Boulevard on Oct. 30, 2022.
As previously reported by Baltimore Witness, Spence’s defense counsel explained how the shooting occurred after an alleged argument between the defendant and the victim, after claiming it was an act of self-defense. Spence’s defense counsel also explained how the stressful situation caused her reaction.
Spence also faces charges in a separate case for an incident that occurred on March 2. Charges include making false statements to an officer, part-taking in perjury with false statements, and filing a false pistol application to purchase a firearm.
Hanna informed Judge Phinn that she believed the two cases would be tried together.
Judge Phinn scheduled the defendant to start jury trial on Aug. 28 before Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Kendra Y. Ausby.
