Judge Denies New Trial for Defendant Convicted of June 2025 Murder

Idris Ramos, 52, who was convicted of first-degree murder in July, appeared before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Michael DiPietro on Oct. 13. The court denied his motion for a new trial, while his defense attorney, Deborah Dennis-Warner, sought additional time to review a pre-sentencing investigation.

According to the charging documents, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers responded to the 100 block of South Broadway Street on June 21, 2025, after reports of a stabbing. Officers found the victim, Tyrell Curtis, 39,  suffering from a stab wound to the chest. Jones was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy determined that he died from a single stab wound to the chest.

Investigators reviewed the surveillance footage that showed Jones involved in an altercation with another man before the man allegedly hit him. Jones then walked toward the intersection of South Broadway and Lombard Street before collapsing. Detectives later identified the suspect as Ramos after officers stopped him a couple of days later because he is said to match the description in an  identification flyer. According to the charging documents, Ramos identified himself in surveillance photographs and told detectives that he had been in the area that night.

During the Oct. 6 proceeding, the defense raised concerns about reviewing the pre-sentence investigation report, which had been received the previous Thursday. The defense had not yet had the opportunity to review the report with Ramos. The state also planned to prepare a memorandum for the defense to review.

The court discussed a  defense motion for a new trial, including questions about a witness’s supposed inconsistent testimony and evidence presented during trial. The defense noted that the stabbing was not captured on surveillance video.

Judge DiPietro stated that the Jury’s decision was not inconsistent with the facts and denied the motion for a new trial.

A new sentencing hearing is scheduled for Jan. 29.
