A Baltimore man involved in a non-fatal shooting agreed to probation before judgment on Jan. 30 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie J. Hong.
Jason Smith and his defense counsel Brandon Mead accepted probation before judgment for the defendant of one year of supervised probation for discharging a firearm, meaning Smith agreed to probation before being judged for the crime.
Smith, 42, is charged with discharging a firearm in connection to an incident on Oct. 10, 2022.
According to court documents, on the day of the incident, officers were called to the 600 block of N. Calhoun Street for reports of shots being fired. On arrival, officers began canvassing in the rear alley of N. Calhoun Street when they came across two bullet shell casings directly outside a residence.
While still canvassing the rear alley, officers saw an unknown black male, later identified as the defendant, standing at the window in his apartment.
Once outside, the officer asked if the defendant knew anything about the shooting that occurred, to which Smith stated that he didn’t know anything about it. However, after pausing for a moment, the defendant proceeded to tell the officer that he was the person who fired the gun prior to police arriving at the scene.
Mead informed the court that the defendant has no prior convictions or pending cases on his record.
In addition, Mead stated that the defendant has two teenage children that he supports while also highlighting that Smith has been a CDL driver for more than six years.
Given the opportunity to address the court, the defendant’s mother said, “I am a truly blessed mother. [Smith] is no angel, but I wouldn’t change anything.”
