Attempted Homicide Defendant Gets New 2023 Trial Date

An attempted homicide defendant’s jury trial was pushed to after the new year on Dec. 2, when he was originally scheduled for trial.

Calvin Hemphill, who is currently facing an onslaught of charges, including attempted murder, assault, and reckless endangerment, among other weapons charges, was scheduled to begin jury selection on Friday but had his case postponed until Feb. 2, 2023.

He is represented by defense attorney Judit Otvos.

The 41-year-old defendant rejected a plea of life in October for allegedly shooting a 53-year-old man on the 1500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in April. During the October hearing, Otvos argued to have the case dismissed as the prosecutor was unprepared and discovery had not yet been received; however, this request was denied.
