Raequan Fields, one of 11 members of the “39 babies” gang, will spend a decade in prison after agreeing to the terms of a prosecutor’s plea offer on Oct. 3.
Roya Hanna, the 23-year-old defendant’s defense attorney, told Baltimore Witness that Fields accepted the prosecutor’s plea for 25 years, suspending all but ten years, for first-degree assault, participation in a criminal gang, and firearm use in a felony violent crime.
Fields’ charges included multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Martin Schreiber presided over Monday’s proceedings, which included plea agreements for Fields’ co-defendants, Damone Cornish and J’Quan Powell.
The only other defendant to have accepted a plea agreement in connection to the gang activity was Stephen Harrington, who is now serving five years, suspending all but two years, with two years of supervised probation for conspiracy participation in a criminal gang; and a concurrent five years, suspending all but two years, with two years of supervised probation for illegal possession of a firearm.
The court will try the remaining defendants in groups; however, Baltimore Witness could not confirm what defendants will be heard in what group.
The gang, named after the Baltimore City ZIP code, 21239, is accused of three murders and eight attempted murders, as well as murder-for-hire plots, drug possession and distribution, and illegally possessing, selling, and trading firearms. WBALTV reported they were indicted by the Maryland Attorney General in August.
Four of the gang members are currently scheduled for trial on Nov. 7, while another two defendants are scheduled for trial on Dec. 12, according to the Maryland Judiciary website. Baltimore Witness was unable to obtain information on the status of defendant Jalen Wise.
