Two Baltimore men accused of stabbing a detainee to death at a correctional facility last year rejected life sentences for the murder on Oct. 3. A jury trial is scheduled for March 2023.

A Baltimore City assistant state’s attorney standing in for the prosecutor assigned to the case offered Kahlil Madden and Cristino Flores-Perez, both 29, life sentences for first-degree murder. Both defendants are also facing charges of conspiracy to first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon with the intent to injure, and possession of a weapon while in confinement.

Madden and Flores-Perez rejected the offer and were scheduled for trial on March 20, 2023, before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lawrence Daniels.

Charging documents report that on Aug. 27, 2021, officers found Shane Burton, a detainee at the Maryland Reception Diagnostic Classification Center, with stab wounds. Burton was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital but died from a total of 16 wounds.
