On July 22, Baltimore residents Khalil Madden and Cristino Flores-Perez and defense counsel received a trial date before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn.
Madden, 28, and Flores-Perez, 29, are charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon with the intent to injure, and possession of a weapon while detained in connection to an incident that occured on Aug. 27, 2021.
According to court documents, on Aug. 27, 2021, the Department of Public Safety Correctional Services Intelligence and Investigative Unit responded to a report of inmate-on-inmate assault at the Maryland Reception Diagnostic Classification Center.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers were made aware that the victim, detainee Shane Burton, had sustained fatal stab wounds and had been transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The coroner’s report states that Burton died from a total of sixteen wounds, seven stab wounds and nine cutting wounds.
Burton was found in a cell, at the facility. Surveillance footage shows the defendants also entering the cell before the incident. Additionally, two handmade weapons were found at the scene.
After discovering the victim’s body, both detainees were searched. Madden and Flores-Perez had sustained minor wounds presumed to be from the victim fighting against the attack.
Madden and Flores-Perez are represented by defense attorneys Staci Pipkin and Sharon Dubey.
A trial date has been set for Oct. 3, but prosecution expects to present the defendants with a plea offer in the next week.
