A bail review hearing for a defendant charged with attempted murder was continued April 8 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie Hong.

LaToya Hicks is charged with attempted murder for two incidents that occurred on the 4700 block of Wakefield Road on Jan. 23 and Feb. 9, respectively.

According to counsel, police responded to a non-fatal shooting on Feb. 9 when the defendant allegedly had an altercation with a person staying at the residence. Surveillance footage of the incident shows the victim hiding behind a car and the defendant throwing clothes off a balcony.

According to counsel, the defendant owned a gun, which accidently went off while the defendant was throwing the victim’s clothes out.

After responding to the Feb. 9 incident, police also learned for another shooting that occurred at the same residence on Jan. 23.

During the Jan. 23 incident, the defendant allegedly shot at the victim. However, according to the victim, another individual shot at him, the bullet hit his cell phone and ricocheted, striking the victim in the leg.

Hicks says she was enrolled in a hospital, Sheppard Pratt, at the time the January shooting occurred. Sheppard Pratt is a nonprofit health provided that focuses on mental health, special education, co-occurring disorders, developmental disability, and social services throughout Maryland.

Defense counsel told Judge Hong they are also waiting on records from Sheppard Pratt to verify the defendant’s alibi. Counsel also confirmed that this is the defendant’s first bail review hearing.

The defense requested the defendant be released to home detention. The prosecution requested she be held due to the serious nature of both events.

Before making a ruling, Judge Hong gave the defense extra time to secure paperwork from the hospital. She said that if the defendant was enrolled during the time of the January shooting, she would be inclined to grant bail.

The defendant is a mother who works from home.

Hicks bail review is scheduled to continue on April 22 with Judge Hong presiding over the hearing
