Judge Denies Bail for 19-Year-Old Defendant

A 19-year-old woman accused of attempted murder was denied bail on Jan. 25 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Phillip Jackson. 

Kyashia Walker is charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree attempted murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of use of a firearm during a violent crime, three counts of reckless endangerment, having a handgun on his person, and discharging firearms in connection to an incident on May 11, 2021. 

During a bail hearing on Tuesday, Judge Jackson listened as the prosecutor informed the court that there was a fight prior to the shooting. She also added that one of the victims had a gun as well and it was difficult to see the other victim shoot back after the defendant already shot. 

Walker’s defense attorney, Martin Cohen argued that the alleged victim started shooting at people which resulted in the defendant shooting back in self-defense. He also said after the shooting the alleged victim was seen with a gun in hand on video footage. 

In addition, Cohen added that several people will testify that the victim was the actual shooter. Plus, there is evidence of the defendant running towards the shooter before the shooting begins as a way of stopping the shooter from harming others. 

After listening to counsel, Judge Jackson denied bail after ruling Walker a safety threat. 

Walker’s next hearing is scheduled for May 19.
