A 24-year-old Baltimore man accused of attempted murder last July rejected a plea offer Jan. 5 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa Phinn

Malik Stewart is charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, first and second-degree assault, having a handgun on his person, use of a firearm in a violent crime, and discharging firearms in connection to an incident on July 15, 2021.

Judge Phinn listened as the prosecutor presented a plea of 30 years, suspending all but 13 years, with three years probation for second-degree attempted murder and five years without parole for use of a firearm during a violent crime.

Under the plea, Stewart must also stay away from the victim and register as a gun offender.

Stewart and his defense attorney, Shamari Taylor, rejected the plea offer. In addition, Stewart decided to maintain his Hicks’ date, which is his right to be tried within 180 days of his or his attorney’s first court appearance.

Stewart’s trial is scheduled for June 2.
