Bail Denied in New Year’s Day Shooting

A Baltimore man charged in connection to a non-fatal shooting on New Year’s Day in 2020 was denied bail on Sept. 8 at Baltimore City Circuit Court.

Charles Hopson, 56, is charged with first and second-degree attempted murder, first and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, firearm use in a violent crime, having a handgun on his person, having a handgun in a vehicle, discharging firearms, and illegal possession of ammo, as well as two counts of firearm possession with a felony conviction.

He is represented by defense attorney Marc Zayon.

On Wednesday, the prosecution told Judge Philip S. Jackson that Hopson shot the victim in the early morning on Jan. 1, 2020, in a populated area. The prosecutor recommended no bail given the defendant’s violent criminal record, which dated back to the 1980s.

Judge Jackson denied bail, and Hopson is scheduled for reception court on Jan. 10, 2022.
