Judge Sentences Defendant for Gun Charge

A judge sentenced a defendant, charged with a non-fatal shooting incident, in mental health court on Aug. 18.

Judge Gale E. Rasin sentenced 34-year-old Jamar Cannon to three years in prison, which were suspended, three years of supervised probation along with special conditions connected to a plea agreement for having a loaded handgun on his person in connection to his involvement in an incident that occurred on Oct. 25, 2019.

The defendant was initially charged with second-degree assault, carrying or wearing a handgun on his person, loaded handgun on his person, reckless endangerment, discharging a firearm, and discharging a firearm within school.

Cannon’s case was transferred from trial court, where he accepted the plea agreement on July 8, to mental health court.

Along with the transfer, his plea was amended to abide by the terms of mental health court which includes forfeiting the firearm used in the incident, complying with a treatment plan and agreement under mental health court, complete a gun offender registration form, report to the Gun Offender Monitoring Unit within 48 hours of release and weekly check-ins with his probation officer.

According to the Maryland Judiciary Case Search, Cannon is scheduled for another hearing in mental health court on Sept. 7.
