On Sept. 23, a jury found 25-year-old Eshawn Jones not guilty of attempted first-degree murder, but convicted him of first-degree assault, armed robbery, attempted armed carjacking and several related conspiracy and firearm charges.
Jones was tried in connection with a Feb. 10, 2022, shooting on the 100 block of N. Smallwood Street. According to charging documents, the victim was sitting in the driver’s seat of his car when he was shot. He attempted to flee but crashed into a vacant building and is now paralyzed in both arms.
During trial, jurors saw Ring camera footage from across the street that showed the victim being shot by someone wearing a red sweatshirt before crashing his vehicle.
Surveillance footage from Gomez Grocery earlier that morning showed Jones wearing what investigators described as the same hoodie. In a recorded March 1, 2022, police interview shown during trial, Jones identified himself as the man wearing a red sweatshirt in the grocery store footage.
Jones later testified that there were several red sweatshirts in the home where he was staying at the time and that he saw another individual put on a red sweatshirt shortly before the shooting.
During a confrontational cross-examination, prosecutors pointed to several alleged inconsistencies between Jones’ testimony on the stand and statements he made during the recorded interview with detectives.
After deliberating, jurors acquitted Jones of attempted first-degree murder but convicted him on the remaining charges.
Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 8 at 11 a.m. in front of Baltimore City Circuit Judge Jeannie Hong.
