Anthony Ross, 26, was sentenced to life in prison on Sept. 15 in connection with a June shooting that left a 23-year-old man dead.
Ross was sentenced to life in prison for first- degree murder followed by an additional 13 years for firearm use in a felony violent crime. He was originally charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree assault, use of a firearm, possession of a firearm, reckless endangerment, handgun on persons, illegal possession of ammunition, and the discharge of a firearm.
The incident occurred on the 1500 block of W. Fayette Street on June 13, 2025. Lavar Steeles was pronounced dead at a local Baltimore hospital.
Detectives recovered 11 shell casings, surveillance footage, and a handgun light attachment from the scene. The DNA testing of the attachment linked Ross to the incident. Also, investigators used cellphone location data and witness statements to link Ross to the incident.
During the sentencing hearing, the prosecution described the shooting as a violent and anti-social act. The prosecution also recommended that Ross receive 20 years to life.
The prosecution noted that Ross was on probation at the time of the incident for a felony narcotics charge in Allegheny County, Maryland.
Standing before the court, Steeles mother said she wanted justice for her son.
Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeannie J. Hong said that because of Ross’ actions, Steeles was no longer walking the Earth.
Members of Ross’ family told him that they loved him and that they had his back as he was being taken out of the courtroom by sheriffs.
Steeles’ mother cried loudly after the sentencing. Another family member consoled her.
