Gregory Stewart was acquitted of all charges on Aug. 26 after a jury trial before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey M. Geller stemming from a Jan. 20 shooting at a residence on Gerland Avenue.
Stewart was charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, firearm use in a felony/violent crime, firearm possession in connection with a violent crime, handgun on person, and motor vehicle unlawful taking.
During opening arguments, the prosecution told jurors, “No crime goes unpunished,” and asked them to focus on the evidence presented during the trial. Notably absent was the victim.
According to charging documents, Stewart’s former girlfriend went to the residence to take him to work. An argument allegedly began after she confronted Stewart about drinking. Stewart allegedly struck her with a handgun before following her inside and firing two shots. One bullet struck another woman in the foot as she attempted to flee.
A Baltimore Police Department (BPD) detective testified that both women identified Stewart as the person responsible. The former girlfriend also identified Stewart during a recorded interview.
Stewart allegedly fled the scene in his former girlfriend’s 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis without permission.
Defense attorney Brandon Thornton told jurors to consider the witnesses and evidence presented by the state before determining whether Stewart was guilty or not guilty.
The victim, with whom Stewart shares a child, was supposed to take the stand to testify against him but was a a no-show.
The jury ultimately acquitted Stewart of all charges.
