A Baltimore City Circuit Court judge sentenced Marquis Brown to 85 years in prison on Aug. 12 for his role in the 2023 mass shooting at Morgan State University that injured five people.
Brown, 20, was represented by defense attorney Judit K. Otvos. Judge Althea M. Handy imposed the sentence, calling the shooting “senseless” and noting that it was remarkable no one was killed.
The shooting occurred on Oct. 3, 2023, during Morgan State University’s homecoming celebration. Gunfire erupted on campus as students and visitors gathered following homecoming events, injuring five people, including four Morgan State students. All five victims survived.
Brown received 30 years for one count of attempted second-degree murder and another consecutive 30-year sentence for a second attempted second-degree murder count. Handy also imposed 20 years for firearm use in a crime of violence and five years for reckless endangerment, with both sentences running consecutively.
Together, those sentences total 85 years. Brown received the maximum penalties on his remaining charges, but those sentences will run concurrently with the 85-year term.
