Jury selection began June 2 in the retrial of Dionte Cain, one of two co-defendants charged in an armed robbery incident that occurred over two years ago in North Baltimore.
Cain, 32, is charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, multiple counts of conspiracy and various gun charges in connection to the incident. He is represented by defense attorney Natalie Finegar.
Cain’s co-defendant, 29-year-old Darnell Johnson, is accused of driving Cain to a Family Dollar parking lot on the 5300 block of York Road, where the robbery attempt unfolded shortly before 5 p.m. on Feb. 2, 2024. Cain is accused of exiting the vehicle, declaring a robbery, and threatening to shoot the victim. Cain then re-entered the vehicle, and the pair fled the scene.
The victim, who sustained gunshot wounds to his left wrist and right thigh, later told Baltimore police that Cain allegedly shot him while returning to the vehicle.
Last April, Johnson pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit armed robbery, acting as an accessory after the fact, and having a loaded handgun in a vehicle. After testifying against Cain last October, he was released on his own recognizance pending sentencing. On the stand, he had told the court Cain allegedly confessed to him that he shot someone.
The court ultimately declared a mistrial in Cain’s case after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict on his charges. Nearly eight months later, Cain is being retried.
Cain’s trial is set to continue through the week before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Lawrence P. Fletcher-Hill.
