The trial of a 19-year-old attempted murder defendant in a case involving a minor victim was postponed on April 21 due to a state’s attorney’s extended medical leave.
Maliq Shelman is charged with attempted murder, assault, conspiracy and several gun offenses in connection to a shooting that occurred last September in Baltimore’s Edgewood neighborhood.
Shortly before midnight on Sept. 29, 2025, Southwest District officers responded to a shooting on the 3500 block of W. Franklin Street, near its intersection with the 500 block of Edgewood Street. Investigators recovered numerous shell casings, live rounds and suspected blood from the scene.
Area surveillance footage captured two men and a minor firing handguns at an unidentified person. During the exchange of gunfire, the minor was shot in the head. Charging documents state that the two adult shooters and the targeted individual fled the scene on foot, abandoning the injured minor on the road.
Approximately two hours later, the two shooters returned for the minor and transported him to Saint Agnes Hospital, where he was treated for his injuries.
During the April 21 postponement hearing, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland acknowledged the prosecutor’s medical issues and granted the state’s request.
Shelman, who is represented by defense attorney Augustine Okeke, is now set to stand trial on June 29 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Anthony F. Vittoria.
