An argument between two brothers over a girlfriend’s driving skills escalated to multiple shots fired and one sibling injured in October.
On. Dec. 30, Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Troy K. Hill stood by the District Court’s decision in November and ordered defendant Lawrence Wheeler to continue to be held without bail. The 44-year-old resident of the city’s Better Waverly neighborhood is represented by attorneys Myron Brown and Bryan Mobley.
Baltimore Police received two 911 calls and a ShotSpotter alert for reported gunfire on the 800 block of Exeter Hall Avenue and 900 block of E. 30th Street around 12:51 a.m. on Oct. 5. Six .38-caliber cartridge casings and suspected blood were found on Exeter Hall Avenue, according to charging documents.
Around the same time as the 911 calls, additional officers were called to MedStar Union Memorial Hospital after a man — later identified as Wheeler’s brother — walked in with a gunshot wound to his groin. Court documents state that the victim was taken to the hospital in a private vehicle, where police reported seeing a handgun in the front driver’s side door.
During their investigation, witnesses told police that the two brothers were arguing while traveling with the victim’s girlfriend at the wheel. Wheeler reportedly told his brother, “I’m going to shoot your b*tch a**,” to which the victim allegedly told him to do so.
The defendant and the victim’s fight got physical in the backseat of the vehicle when they arrived outside Wheeler’s home, charging documents state. The victim’s girlfriend got out of the vehicle as Wheeler and his brother continued to struggle, the former allegedly had a handgun beside him. A witness reported hearing a gunshot followed by additional gunshots.
When the victim said he was shot, his girlfriend picked up the handgun and put it in the front driver’s side door — later seen by police at the hospital.
Police executed a search and seizure warrant on the vehicle and reportedly found a Smith & Wesson M&P Bodyguard .38 semi-automatic pistol on Oct. 6.
Wheeler is currently facing six weapons charges, including discharging a firearm in Baltimore City, as well as reckless endangerment.
