Jurors found 26-year-old Kahlil Calloway not guilty Sept. 22 of all charges in connection to a double shooting incident that occurred the day after New Year’s in East Baltimore.
Calloway was initially charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and multiple firearm offenses in connection to the Jan. 2 shooting, which occurred on the 2600 block of E. Federal Street. A male and female victim, then respectively 32 and 37, were injured in the shooting.
Attorneys delivered closing arguments Sept. 24 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge John A. Howard. Though Calloway claimed he never owned or possessed a gun, the prosecution emphasized that his DNA was found on the door handle of the vehicle the victims were sitting in when they were shot.
While the male victim, who Calloway claimed he was close with, declined to testify, the female victim testified that Calloway previously sought sexual relations with her.
The female victim had described the shooter as a light-skinned male with almond-shaped eyes, but defense attorney Marci T. Johnson described Calloway’s appearance as a dark-skinned male with a heart tattoo on his face.
Johnson urged the jury to focus on the male victim’s refusal to testify, as well as the inconsistent descriptions of the shooter and lack of evidence connecting the firearm in the crime to Calloway.
No further hearings are scheduled in this case.
