A 29-year-old man will go to trial this November for shooting and assault charges after an argument turned violent outside the Gentlemen’s Gold Club in Southeast Baltimore.

On Sept. 24, Malik Oakes and his attorney, Jason Ott, agreed on a three-day trial, beginning Nov. 12, with Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Althea M. Handy presiding.

Oakes rejected the prosecution’s plea offer before Judge Melissa K. Copeland during reception court, which would’ve required the defendant to serve five years of a 20-year sentence and five years of supervised probation for first-degree assault and a concurrent five years without parole for using a firearm in commission of a violent crime.

Baltimore City Police were called to the club at 5801 Pulaski Highway, where they met the victim around 2:19 a.m. on May 4. The victim told officers that he and Oakes were arguing outside when the defendant “slapped him with an open hand,” pointed a black gun at him and then fired. Charging documents report that no shell casings were found at the scene and club staff “didn’t have access to the playback” footage.

The statement of charges did not state whether the victim suffered any gunshot wounds.

Oakes, who was at the scene when officers arrived and identified by the victim, attempted to drive away, but was ordered out of his vehicle and arrested without further incident. Police found a loaded black Glock 22 on the driver’s seat floor between the defendant’s legs.

In addition to the charges mentioned in the plea offer, defendant is also charged with second-degree assault, having a handgun on his person and in a vehicle, reckless endangerment and discharging a firearm in Baltimore City.
