Following a mistrial in the murder trial of 20-year-old Montay Anthony Brown, a new trial was scheduled before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland on Aug. 8.
Brown is charged with first-degree murder and felony firearm use in a violent crime in connection with a shooting that left Garfield Redd, 34, deceased. A jury failed to reach a verdict in the first proceeding.
Police documents state that Redd was traveling on W. 21st Street on May 6, 2024, when he stopped at the intersection of Charles Street to allow a pedestrian to cross.
Surveillance footage shows a man approaching the driver’s side window. The man then pulled a sawed-off shotgun out of his backpack and shot Redd in the eye. The man can be seen on footage fleeing on foot.
An officer found Redd’s car, a 2006 black Acura TLX, crashed on the sidewalk on the unit block of E. 21st Street, with Redd inside. Redd was pronounced dead at the scene.
An anonymous tipper provided detectives with Brown’s phone number and Instagram account, leading to his arrest.
Brown’s trial is scheduled to begin on Oct. 27 and last four days before Judge LaZette C. Ringgold-Kirksey.
