Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland set a date for the murder trial of three co-defendants accused of murdering a teenager and injuring two women during a fatal carjacking in 2019.
Philip Morton, 27, William Andre Stewart III, 26, and Diamante Teal, 28, face charges of first- and second-degree murder and assault, carjacking and related conspiracy firearm and conspiracy violations in connection to the July 11, 2019 incident, which occurred at a Subway restaurant near on the 5600 block of The Alameda Market in North Baltimore.
All three defendants were previously held in federal prison, and now face trial in Baltimore City for the same crimes.
The deceased, a 16-year-old male, was pronounced dead the same day following fatal wounds to his torso. The female victims sustained injuries to their ear and leg, respectively.
During the hearing, Stewart expressed confusion about being charged at both federal and state levels.
Defense attorneys Avrohom Greenfield, Gregory Fischer and James Rodriguez emphasized the need for a speedy trial, hoping to expedite proceedings to address the defendants’ pending charges in both federal and state jurisdictions. In consideration of their joint request, Judge Copeland ultimately set the trial to begin Sept. 24.
