Five officers from the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) were called to testify by the prosecution against 20-year-old Montay Brown on July 31.
Brown is accused of first-degree murder and firearm use in a violent crime in connection to the murder of 33-year-old Garfield Redd that occurred on May 6, 2024, on the unit block of E. 21st Street.
The state’s attorney first questioned a BPD criminal technician who was an initial responder to the May 6 crime scene. They recounted discovering a vehicle on the sidewalk of E. 21st Street with Redd already deceased in the driver’s seat. They noted that nothing of evidentiary value, such as DNA or fingerprints, was recovered from the scene.
A BPD crime lab technician processed the murder vehicle and recovered two ballistic remnants including a single piece of ammunition that the prosecution presented to the jury. They also recovered a jacket with blood on it from inside the vehicle.
In April 2024, a month before the incident, two BPD detectives who identified Brown as the alleged perpetrator of the homicide. engaged in a weapons pat-down of Brown. Jurors watched footage of the interaction from the detectives’ body-worn cameras.
The final witness was a detective with the BPD Homicide Unit who led the investigation of Redd’s murder. They recounted responding to the crime scene, searching for and later acquiring surveillance footage of the crime, and soliciting a search warrant for the vehicle in which Redd’s body was located.
Closing arguments are expected on Aug. 1, following which the jury will begin its deliberations. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Levi S. Zaslow will oversee the presentation of the verdict.
