Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland postponed the non-fatal shooting, drug trafficking case of K’Hova Barfield on June 26.
Defense attorney James Sweeting III took on Barfield’s case in May. During the hearing, Sweeting requested a postponement due to lack of preparation time to review DNA evidence.
Barfield, 23, is charged with firearm use in a drug trafficking crime, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession with intent to distribute narcotics, and several other firearm-related violations in connection to a New Year’s Day shooting.
On Jan. 1, 2025, Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers heard gunshots while conducting a routine patrol in the area of the 400 block of W. Saratoga Street. Upon responding, officers located Barfield walking eastbound on Saratoga Street with a gunshot wound to his left eye.
Barfield’s blood trail led officers to a trashcan allegedly containing a 9mm gun with blood and a plastic bag with 53 black jugs of suspected crack cocaine.
According to charging documents, footage from a tobacco shop’s cameras on W. Saratoga Street shows two unknown individuals engaging in a verbal altercation with Barfield. Barfield is seen reaching for his waistband, then falling to the ground before running to the trashcan containing the recovered gun and cocaine.
The recovered controlled dangerous substance had blood on the packaging bag consistent with the blood on the firearm.
Barfield’s one-day trial is now set to begin on Aug. 4 before Judge Martin H. Schreiber II.
