Dayawnis Mason, 25, appeared  before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Jennifer B. Schiffer for a violation of probation hearing on June 17.

According to charging documents, on Aug. 4, 2018, Zeta Marie Jones and her son were walking in the 2600 block of Liberty Heights Avenue. Jones’ son advised them to look both ways before crossing the street. Jones was in the second lane, and her son in the third when he allegedly turned around to see a champagne-colored Infiniti sedan hit his mother and continue driving. Jones was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mason eventually pleaded guilty to negligent manslaughter and failure to stop after causing Jones’ death. In October 2019, he was sentenced to four years, followed by three years of probation.

On Feb. 27, during Mason’s probation, he was the subject of an arrest warrant after he was suspected of illegal firearm possession, having a loaded handgun on his person and other firearm-related offenses. These charges were also in violation of his probation agreement. Six days prior, on Feb. 21, he was charged with two counts of violation of probation.

Currently, several warrants have yet to be served, causing a delay in the proceedings.

As a result Mason is set to return to court July 16 for another violation of probation hearing.
