A 61-year-old man manslaughter defendant received a new trial date before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland on Feb. 10.
Steven Heggie, Sr., is charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in the death of a child younger than 13 years old, second-degree child abuse, involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment for the death of 13-month-old Messiah Heggie on Oct. 27, 2023.
Prosecutors offered Heggie a plea deal of life in prison, suspending all but 25 years. His defense attorney, Robert A Cohen, rejected the offer.
Heggie, who was hospitalized and underwent a mental health evaluation, is scheduled for three day trial on June 9, 2025.
