Murder Suspect Goes on Trial in A Mass Shooting

Opening arguments in the murder trial of Daaon Spears were heard before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Robert K. Taylor Jr. on Oct. 21.

Spears, 18, is accused of 31 charges including two counts of first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, first degree and second degree assault in a mass shooting.

The prosecution called a Baltimore Police Officer (BPD) who testified she recovered a bullet fragment from one of the victims. A forensic technician said she retrieved evidence from the defendant’s home including a book bag allegedly containing two boxes of bullets that fit a 9 mm gun found in a cardboard box. She claimed she also found an ammunition magazine on a mattress in the basement.

The third witness was an officer who met Spears three months prior to the crime and walked the defendant home during school hours.

One Jan 4,2023 police responded to a shooting that occurred on the 4400 block of Edmondson Avenue at the Edmondson Village Shopping Center. Deanta Dorsey, 16, and four others were transported to University of Maryland Shock Trauma. Dorsey died two days later from his injuries.
