Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Paul Cucuzzella set a hearing date to consider defense attorney Andre Mahasa’s request to have Ty’Yon Scruggs, 17, sentenced by the Baltimore Juvenile Justice Division.

As previously reported by Baltimore Witness, Scruggs was denied a transfer to juvenile court in October 2024. Eventhough Scruggs was not 18 at the time of the alleged crime, the court ordered that he be tried as an adult.

Scruggs entered an Alford plea to reckless endangerment, having a loaded handgun on his person, and discharging a gun. Alford pleas enable defendants to plead guilty while maintaining innocence.

According to charging documents, Scruggs was identified as one of two suspects in a non-fatal shooting that occurred on Oct. 29, 2023. The other suspect was apprehended after fleeing on foot. Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers found them to be in possession of a black Taurus G2C 9mm pistol.

Eyewitness identified Scruggs as the shooter from his clothing. It was determined that he was not in possession of the handgun used in the shooting,

Scruggs’ hearing to decide if he would be sentenced by the juvenile justice division is scheduled for April 15.
