Jury Convicts Repeat Offender of Shelby Avenue Murder

Jurors reached a near-unanimous guilty verdict in the trial of Everett Schwartz, 38, on April 24, one day after attorneys rested their cases before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Alan C. Lazerow.

Schwartz was convicted on charges of first-degree murder, firearm use, having a handgun on his person, and firearm possession as a prohibited person. He was acquitted of one charge of having a handgun in a vehicle.

The charges stemmed from the murder of 34-year-old Timothy Orem, who was shot dead in Curtis Bay on the night of Feb 1, 2021. Orem’s death was among a string of three shootings Schwartz was accused of commiting between January and February 2021.

Prior to the ruling in Orem’s death, Schwartz had already been serving a 39-year sentence for the murder of 46-year-old Tavaughn Anderson on Jan. 21, 2021, as well as a separate 18-year sentence in a non-fatal shooting that occurred just one week later. He was convicted of the two shootings last May.

On Feb 1, 2021, officers responded to a report of a shooting on the 3600 block of Shelby Avenue, where they found Orem lying face up in the middle of the road, suffering gunshot wounds to his torso.

At autopsy found Orem’s death was caused by gunshot wounds.

Charging documents state Schwartz shot Orem multiple times and continued to fire as the victim began running for his life. After Orem collapsed, Schwartz appeared to rob him before leaving him in the street and fleeing in an attempt to evade police officers.

Officers located a witness, who was able to identify Schwartz as the shooter through recovered video footage of the shooting.

Following the guilty verdict, Schwartz now awaits sentencing.
