Woman Gets Life Sentence for Murdering Her Father

Shanelle Reed, 38, was sentenced to life for fatally shooting her 59-year-old father, Brian Reed, on Jan. 28, 2025.

Reed’s sentence comes exactly three months after she was found guilty of first-degree murder and use of a firearm during a violent crime before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Troy Hill

According to court records, police responded to a reported shooting on the 5600 block of Groveland Avenue, where they found Brian Reed suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to an area hospital and later pronounced dead.

Shanelle Reed was arrested at the scene. She testified to investigators that she and her father had been arguing directly before the shooting, adding that she had called police twice earlier that day. Records confirm police responded to the residence twice on the evening of Jan. 18; the first time for a family disturbance, and the second for an alleged assault.

Following victim impact statements from three family members and close friends at the defendant’s sentencing on Jan. 28, Shanelle Reed stood to share her side of the story.

She stated that her father had been taken to a hospital at the time of her arrest, and she only learned of his passing afterward. He had been alive when she last saw him, she explained.

“Yes I shot him, but I did not kill him,” she told Judge Hill.

Judge Hill handed the defendant a life sentence for first-degree murder and a concurrent five years without parole for using a firearm to carry out the crime. Shanelle Reed will also be added to the Gun Offender Registry.
