As trial continued in the March 12, 2022 Stiles Street murder case on Nov. 18, jurors heard cell site data and graphic medical testimony that prosecutors say ties 26-year-old Gregory Jones to the death of 39-year-old Olen Smith.
Gregory Jones is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and related firearm violations due to his alleged involvement in Smith’s death, which occurred on the 800 block of Stiles Street.
A forensic pathologist who conducted Smith’s autopsy later testified that he was found with 12 gunshot wounds along his body – four each to the back of his head and torso, and four on his arms and legs. Many of these wounds were lethal, including shots that fractured his skull and struck his spinal cord. Smith’s manner of death was ruled a homicide, and gunpowder and soot found in his wounds suggested he was shot at close range.
According to eyewitnesses, Jones was one of two men involved in the March 12, 2022 shooting. While executing a search and seizure warrant at Jones’ residence, investigators allegedly discovered a Glock .45 caliber handgun and an iPhone, both of which Jones admitted to owning.
An FBI cell site analyst testified that Jones’ phone went silent and detected no location between 12:43 a.m. to 1:25 a.m. on the date of the crime, indicating he either placed the device in airplane mode or removed the SIM card that connects to a mobile network.
Under the cross-examination from defense attorney Avrohom Greenfield, the analyst admitted it was possible Jones’ phone was running normally and simply failed to interact with cell towers in the vicinity, explaining the loss of signal.
Jones’ trial is set to continue Nov. 20 before Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Troy K. Hill.
