Vehicular Manslaughter Defendant Prepares For Summer Trial, Possible Open Plea

A 44-year-old Baltimore man faces up to 20 years for vehicular manslaughter after running a red light in West Baltimore and causing a fatal crash that killed two and injured four others.

On Jan. 9, Mark Anthony Redding, his attorney Maureen O’Leary and a stand-in for opposing counsel agreed to begin the three-day trial on June 3, which Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa M. Phinn scheduled before Judge Timothy J. Doory. The defendant is charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and faces between six and 20 years incarceration.

During Friday’s proceeding, the prosecutor standing in noted that counsel is discussing an open plea to argue Redding’s sentence.

Marquise Sharps, 37, and Dytanyis David Jr., 23 — who were sitting in the back seat of the 2003 Chevy Tahoe driven by Redding — were killed in the tragic crash at the intersection of the 1900 block of Edmondson Avenue and the 600 block of N. Monroe Street on Feb. 22, 2024. Two more occupants of the Tahoe, both 23, were listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries but survived.

The two occupants of the 2014 Chevy Cruze–the other vehicle involved– refused medical transportation for treatment. Redding was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital for minor injuries, but left before being discharged by staff, according to charging documents.

During their review of video footage from the nearby Uptown Liquor and Bar, Baltimore Police calculated that Redding was driving approximately 53 mph in a 30-mph zone based on the video’s frame rate. Investigation of the Tahoe’s module showed the vehicle was traveling 85 mph approximately five seconds before impact and 52 mph approximately one second before impact.

Upon impact, the Tahoe rotated counterclockwise toward the southeast corner of the intersection and hit a traffic pole off its base before rolling over at least once more, court documents state. The Cruze was found against a building with heavy front end damage; however, no damage to a building.
