The trial of a 66-year-man accused of shooting his godson after an argument nearly a year ago was postponed on March 21.
Baltimore resident Spencer Bright was scheduled for jury trial on Monday. However, according to the Baltimore City Circuit Court’s criminal division, his trial was postponed.
Neither Bright’s defense attorney, Benjamin Charlton, nor the state’s attorney’s office could be reached for comment in regards to the postponement.
The defendant, who is charged multiple counts of attempted murder and assault as well as two weapons charges, last appeared in court in January when he rejected a plea of 15 years, suspending all but four years, with three years supervised probation for first-degree assault.
A new trial date has not been listed on the Maryland Judiciary website as of Tuesday afternoon.
According to charging documents, Baltimore Police Department officers were called to Bright’s residence on the 400 block of N. Robinson Street on March 28, 2021, in response to a shooting. During their review of private security camera footage, officers saw and heard the defendant and the victim, later identified as Bright’s godson, arguing on the defendant’s doorstep when Bright allegedly told the victim he would “blow your [expletive] head off,” saying, “I don’t give a [expletive] what you ask for.”
The footage then showed Bright forcing the victim down his front porch steps. When the victim attempted to walk back up the steps, charging documents state, Bright allegedly shot the victim in the groin with a 12-gauge shotgun.
Bright agreed to speak with detectives and was arrested without incident.
Family members who later responded to the scene informed police that the victim “had ongoing issues with his godfather” and was homeless and suffered from mental illness, charging documents state. One of the family members also told police the two were arguing about the victim using Bright’s home for personal hygiene.
