Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Melissa K. Copeland set a June 16 pretrial hearing date for attempted murder defendant Javon Hines, 24, on April 4. Whether Hines will go on trial depends on the results of a “not criminally responsible” (NCR) evaluation. He was recently transferred to Johns Hopkins Hospital for the assessment.
Hines is charged with attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, and several firearm charges in connection to an Oct. 21, 2022 shooting incident that occurred in front of the 3300 block of Bayonne Avenue in the Hamilton neighborhood of Baltimore City. Responding Baltimore Police Department (BPD) officers located a Black male suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body. At Johns Hopkins Hospital, medical staff located two gunshot wounds to his liver and right kidney.
A witness later advised they saw a man called “Black” shoot the victim, and investigators were able to identify Hines as “Black” using BPD databases. Officers arrested Hines on Nov. 16, 2022 and allegedly found him to be in possession of a Glock G48 semi-automatic pistol. Ballistics examinations linked the gun to the Bayonne Avenue shooting.
Hines is also charged in the 2022 murder of Elise Wars, 40, and her daughter, 4-year-old Khori Ashton, whose bodies were found the same day as Hines’ arrest. The apparent double homicide occurred at the APM Inn and Suites located in the 430 block of Dual Highway in Hagerstown. Investigators later learned Wars and Ashton had been residing at the hotel for several months.
